A culture of death and a tyranny of the experts

It is good that the Court of Appeal has reaffirmed the rights of patients to make choices about their own treatment. Of course, we value our doctors and nurses, and they often have difficult life-and-death decisions to make. We don’t envy them in this regard, and no one should think such judgments are simple.

But we would be foolish to think such decisions are neutral and not influenced by the prevailing culture in which we live. The fact of the matter is, medical professionals are as much influenced by the trends in our culture as anyone else.
