The first shared faith school in Wales has begun taking students for the new academic year. St Joseph’s Catholic High School in Wrexham is now known as St Joseph’s Catholic and Anglican High School. The merger decision was agreed two years ago by the denominations.
In what is seen as a possible precedent for future mergers, around 650 pupils will attend the school ¯ an increase of about 150. It is thought some 60% of pupils will be Catholic, with the remainder Anglican.
Efforts to merge Catholic and ‘Protestant’ state schools in Scotland to enable sharing of campus facilities have proved contentious.
