The Assisted Dying Bill is due to be published on 29 November and MPs will have their first opportunity to debate it and vote on it.
The debate and vote will be at the ‘second reading’ phase, the ‘first reading’ being when the intention to publish the bill – introduced by Labour’s Kim Leadbeater (pictured) – was announced in Parliament.
At second reading, MPs get their first chance to debate the general principles of the published bill and decide whether it should move to the next stage.
In places like Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the US State of Oregon, laws have been expanded to include young people, the mentally unwell, and prisoners.
