I love reading books written by John Benton as he is usually a clear and concise writer. This book is no exception. The book restates and rejoices in what Christ achieved through his death and resurrection on behalf of sinners. Subjects like salvation by faith alone, penal substitution, justification, imputed righteousness, Christ’s perfect obedience and sanctification are all covered. Mr Benton deals with these subjects through exposition of key bible passages like Isaiah 63 and Romans 3.
The book began as a sermon series which explains the clear application throughout. Each chapter ends with a section entitled ‘What’s the big deal for me?’ (you must read the book to understand the title) in which a story is told to highlight one area application for each doctrine covered.
Although the book covers theological subjects it does not use theological jargon which makes it useful for young Christians or for those who are seeking the truth.
‘At the Cross’ is simple but never simplistic and deals skilfully and masterfully with the biblical text. I wholeheartedly recommend this book which could be used as a discussion starter within a house group or for personal devotions.
