Britain should take warning from countries where assisted dying has been given the green light, a senior commentator has said.

Dr Gordon Macdonald, chief executive of campaign group Care Not Killing, said Britain should focus on improving palliative and end of life care, rather than legalising euthanasia.

He said people had been lured by the ‘myth of the Hollywood death’, thinking their end will be quick and painless and entirely their choice.

However, he pointed to the US State of Oregon, where elderly, vulnerable and disabled people have said they felt pushed to ending their lives early, often in slow and painful ways.
