Cloning
Human embryos have been used to create colonies of embryonic stem cells, according to an MSNBC report.
Referring to an article in USjournal Nature, the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory claims to have created two lines of cells by using cloning technology.
According to the report, this ‘accomplishment’ moves science closer to the goal of taking an adult cell, fusing this with an egg and activating it to make an embryo, and then using this embryo to create stem cells that match patients.
Scientists hope the cells could one day be used to treat or cure diseases like diabetes, and usher in an era of so-called ‘regenerative medicine’.
