This is a controversial subject and it would be easy for ET to ignore it. But it is also an important matter in a society where nearly half of all marriages end in divorce. The subject needs to be addressed both by churches and by Christians individually.

This month we include three contributions on the subject. The authors are not in complete agreement and this reflects the fact that a range of opinions are held (with equal sincerity) by Evangelical and Reformed believers. The Editors do not necessarily agree with everything that is said in these articles. But we do agree strongly with all three contributors that Christians must base their convictions, counsel and practice on Scripture alone.

Differences arise, of course, in the application of the biblical teaching. The present articles are offered in a spirit of biblical enquiry and in the hope that they will encourage all of us to search the Scriptures for ourselves, ‘to find out whether these things [are] so’ (Acts 17:11).
