I am in awe of super-organised people who seem to be so useful for the Lord. I want to be more like that, but I am not. Where do I start?

Have you heard of the 4 a.m. club? These folks steal a march on the rest of us by rising early and starting fast, doing a day’s work by the time many others are fumbling for their alarms. Are you envious of the discipline and drive of such people? Do you excuse yourself with Psalm 127: ‘it is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late’?

Consider Christ, who moves with unhurried determination across the landscape of the Gospels. He is at once proactive and reactive, at once pursuing his Father’s agenda without wavering and yet able to respond to true and pressing needs. He seems not to succumb to ‘the tyranny of the urgent’ but is governed by principle and conviction. In fact, our Lord seems to have devoted his first and best hours – and sometimes whole nights – to communion with his Father, calibrating his sense of his priorities (e.g. Mark 1:35-38).
