Just 45 miles off the southeast coast of England lies a land of material wealth and spiritual poverty. Belgium, like the rest of Europe, ranks among the world’s needy mission fields.

Only about 4 per cent of the eleven million population have any kind of Protestant connection, and true evangelical believers number around one per cent.

Traditionally, Roman Catholicism has been the main religion in Belgium, but a survey by Ipsos in 2023 suggests that half of Belgians have no real religious affiliation. Mr and Ms Average do not see organised religion as relevant to daily life.

This is true for both the Dutch-speaking Flemings in the north and French-speaking Walloons in the south. This country straddles the cultural, geographical, and linguistic divide between the Germanic north and the Latin south.

History

The modern Kingdom of Belgium dates back to 1830, but its territorial history goes back much further to the first century and the days of the Roman province of Gallia Belgica.
