Cromer Convention

It is a blessing for a church with a small core congregation to welcome visitors. Cromer Baptist Church’s Spring Convention on 24-26 May was such an occasion.

We were glad to welcome to our pulpit Daniel Peters from Newcastle and Richard Brooks from Matlock. Dan preached on our Lord’s great cry, ‘It is finished!’ (John 19:30). This writer was gripped by the personal implications of this. The cry was not simply an affirmation of the technical plan of salvation, but it was for me personally that Christ finished his work of redemption.

Rev. Peters also preached on the Lord’s Day: from Genesis 3:26 -28 in the morning, and on the Pharisee and tax collector (Luke 18) in the evening.

The bank holiday was dry but cool and our meetings began with prayer. Rev. Brooks, after leading worship and prayers, spoke from Psalm 27 – ‘Beholding the beauty of the Lord’ – showing how we could see this in God’s attributes, covenant and promises. In the evening he spoke from Psalm 90 on ‘Reflecting the beauty of the Lord’.

Mr Brooks also spoke on ‘John Paton – missionary to the New Hebrides’, a wonderful story of the Lord’s sending a missionary to the ‘uttermost parts of the earth’ on a dangerous and difficult assignment. The gospel has the power to triumph in the worst societies.

Let us beseech the Lord to do a similar work in our own nation, today as much in thrall to false religion as the nineteenth century New Hebrides.
