Family breakdown

The breakdown of family life has dire consequences for the whole of society, according to a leading family judge.

Mr Justice Coleridge, a Family Division judge, spoke to the Family Holiday Association at Westminster and said that the ramifications of family break-up on the wider society could no longer be ignored.

Reported in theDaily Telegraph, he said: ‘Marriage has proved to be the most enduring relationship, and statistically the children of such relationships perform the best. This has to be faced, however unpalatable to its detractors. Support for marriage therefore makes pragmatic common sense because it is demonstrably in the public interest’.

He added that, with so many children scarred by their parents’ break-ups, it could no longer be seen as just a matter for the individuals involved.
