Free Church wants schools back

The editor of the Free Church‘s Monthly Record magazine has called for the return of Presbyterian faith schools, in an open letter to Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond.

David Robertson said the Free Church of Scotland, along with others, handed over their schools to be run by the state in 1872. Part of the agreement at the time was that the schools would be run on Christian principles. Now it wants them back.

He pointed out that politicians were generally in favour of religious schools; there is a large number of Catholic schools and a willingness to secure funding for Muslim schools. Therefore, there can be no real grounds for opposing Christian schools run by a Presbyterian church or other religious group.

Rev. Robertson’s remarks come in response to the Scottish Government’s call for a ‘national conversation’ to gather views about government services and future policy direction in Scotland.
