Gay activist Peter Tatchell has turned his attack on HM The Queen, claiming that she was ‘colluding with prejudice’ for extending her good wishes to the new Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (FCA).
According to reports from the BBC, the FCA, which has stated publicly its biblical stance on marriage and homosexuality, received a letter from the Queen. Tatchell said that her correspondence with the FCA proved the Queen was endorsing anti-homosexual Christian fundamentalism.
In her letter, which was a reply to one sent by the FCA to inform her of its UK launch, the Queen wrote that she understood their concerns and appreciated their commitment to ‘orthodox, biblical Anglicanism’.
Tatchell suggested that the Queen, as head of the Anglican Church, was ‘taking sides against gay equality’ and that, Tatchell added, meant that the Queen was endorsing a ‘homophobic grouping within the Church of England’.
However, Buckingham Palace moved to assure newspapers that the Queen’s letter was merely one of many that she writes to new organisations. The Queen has often publicly spoken of her ‘personal faith’.
