Here is a little gem! In the foreword Sinclair Ferguson speaks of his debt to the author for more than four decades. I too can identify with that, having enjoyed using his Bible reading notes over many years and occasionally sat under his ministry.
James Philip’s exposition of the Word and its pastoral application are a great joy — evident in this little book, which is based on some of his sermons. He describes the final 24 hours of the Lord Jesus’ life on earth as ‘a holy of holies’ in Scripture and it is these hours that the book covers.
We are encouraged to ‘walk through these hours … with a deep sense of awe and reverence’ (p.4). We are provided with much more than a detailed historical record of Christ’s death — there is also an explanation of what happened and why it needed to happen. We are brought afresh to the wonder and glory of the cross.
This superb book ends by quoting ‘When I survey the wondrous cross’. May this small publication cheer the author in his increasing infirmity and prove a blessing to many readers.
