The government has finally published its long-awaited guidance for the handling of transgender issues in schools in England. It seems that Christian teachers will not be compelled to use a pupil’s preferred gender pronouns if the teacher has a ‘good faith’ objection. It also appears that schools will be encouraged to inform parents if their child starts identifying as a different gender from his or her birth sex. And single-sex spaces like toilets and changing rooms will be protected. On these points and others, the guidelines are to be welcomed.
