UK government blocks Scotland’s new transgender self-identification laws, sparking showdown in courts

The UK government has decided to block Scotland’s controversial Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill from becoming law.

The bill is highly divisive because it gives people as young as 16 the right to legally change their sex without a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

That would put Scotland at odds with the gender recognition laws in the rest of Great Britain, and the UK government wants equality laws to be consistent.
