The governor of the US state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has signed a new law banning most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
But the new law will not come into effect until courts have ruled on an ongoing case challenging the existing 15-week ban.
‘We are proud to support life and family in the state of Florida,’ the governor said in a statement. He said the law would ‘defend the dignity of human life and transform Florida into a pro-family state’.
The laws on abortion throughout the United States were thrown wide open last year after a landmark ruling by the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
