What an unusual title! Think of it as a spur to more serious general reading. This excellent book is an enthusiastic commendation of specific publications and their authors. Over 30 contributors were asked to write about a book that had made a lasting impression on their lives. The result, clearly a labour of love for the contributors, is an absorbing introduction to their chosen authors and their writings.
As expected, the majority of the books bear names of notable leaders from previous generations. We meet Calvin, Spurgeon, Bunyan, Ryle, Lloyd-Jones and many other outstanding authors. The subjects range from biographical to expositional, devotional to apologetics, and evangelism. Here is a rich collection of instructive and inspirational material, and one of its attractive features is the brevity of each discrete chapter.
It is appropriate that this book is dedicated to Iain and Jean Murray. Through their commitment to the publication of Puritan and Reformed literature, the lives and ministry of thousands have been transformed. It is typical of their self-effacement that their photo is at the end of the book, not the beginning! Huge thanks are due to them both.
